"Montessori" and "creche" get used interchangeably in Ireland — but they're not the same thing. Here's the real difference.
What is the Montessori method?
Montessori is an educational approach developed by Dr Maria Montessori in the early 1900s. It's child-led: children choose from a carefully prepared set of activities, work independently, and teachers observe and guide rather than instruct.
How a Montessori differs from a creche
- Age groups: most Irish Montessoris run 2.5–6 years. A creche covers 6 months to school age.
- Learning: child-led exploration vs a structured curriculum (Aistear/Síolta in both — but Montessori applies it differently).
- Environment: Montessori rooms have real wooden materials, low shelves and defined "work areas". Creches typically have themed play corners.
- Daily routine: long uninterrupted work cycles (2–3 hours) in Montessori; shorter rotating activities in a creche.
Cost comparison
Montessori sessions are usually 2.5–3 hours a day, term-time. Fees vary from €280–€450 a month before ECCE. Full-day creches with wraparound care are more expensive because they cover more hours.

How to decide
- Choose Montessori if you want a calm, child-led environment for 2.5+ years and don't need long days.
- Choose a creche if you need full-day childcare covering the under-3s, or you want more structured group activities.
