Most Irish parents are caught off guard by just how early you need to start looking for a creche, especially in Dublin and the commuter counties. The honest answer is: as soon as you find out you're expecting.
Why so early?
Creches in Dublin, Cork city, and Kildare commuter towns regularly have 12 to 18 month waiting lists for under-two places. The under-two age group is where the spots are tightest, because regulated staff-to-child ratios mean each room can only take a handful of babies at a time.
The Irish creche search in three phases
- During pregnancy. Shortlist 5–10 creches in your area, visit 3–4 of them, and join multiple waiting lists. Most charge a small registration fee (€50–€150) per list.
- 3–6 months before return-to-work. Re-confirm your place, sort out your NCS registration, and arrange settling-in days.
- The month before. Pay the deposit, sign the contract, and start your phased settling-in (usually 1–2 weeks).
Joining several waiting lists
It is normal — and recommended — to join three to five lists. Crèches expect this. Crechely lets you manage all your lists in one dashboard so you don't lose track of where your child is in the queue.
What about NCS?
You can register for the National Childcare Scheme as soon as your child has a PPS number, which is usually within a few weeks of birth. Don't wait — your subsidy starts from the date your registration is approved.
